Hey Y’all! Want to hear about our second day in Rome? It was raining when we arrived to the Colosseum so we rocked out some amazing ponchos. ๐ The photo below left is a photo of our Roma passes, which we HIGHLY recommend if you’re traveling to Rome and desiring to visit many tourist destinations. The pass is $30 or $35 (I can’t remember), and it allows you to visit a few separate destinations. Also, you get to skip the lines, which was invaluable when we went to the Colosseum! That line would’ve been two or three hours! With our Roma pass, we completely bypassed all of the people waiting in line in the rain and got right in!
The Colosseum is an amazing sight! I know you’ve probably seen The Gladiator, but being in the actual location is unbelievable.
Holes through the walls are fun. Here are our gladiator faces. HAHA!
This place is huge. It’s amazing to think that people built it in 70 A.D. and it’s still the largest amphitheater in the world.
A view of part of Palatine Hill from the Colosseum:
And the Arch of Constantine covered in scaffolding:
The roads surrounding the Colosseum are still cobblestone. I liked the one in the middle because it was shaped like a heart.
Looking at this, we were like, “We’ve definitely GOT to come back to see it at night!”
Gladiator poses! And I was even wearing my Warrior Dash shirt. ๐
All I have to say about this is: Be happy and silly. Life’s too short to try to act cool! Just have fun!
Palatine Hill & the Roman Forum were up next!
This was surreal. Walking the streets of ancient Rome felt like we were in a movie set; it didn’t feel like it was a real place from thousands of years ago. We took so many photos!
The photo on the right. Oh my! Josh can’t handle my sassiness! ๐
In the basement of one of the old palaces of a Roman Emperor: wouldn’t it be an amazing place for a photo shoot with high fashion models?
Public elections and other government business was held here. It was basically a town square where lots of social gatherings and political gatherings were held.
By this time, the rain was completely finished & beautiful blue skies arrived.
Sunshine!
I know, I know. . . we just posted a blog full of photos of ancient ruins, but it was sooooo cool to experience in person. My mom always tells me, “Don’t just take pictures of buildings or landscapes on vacation. Make sure that you get into the pictures, too. Otherwise, it’s boring.” haha. We got in some of the photos, but others, we just really wanted to shoot of the astounding surroundings we found ourselves in!
There were dueling bands in the square up the hill from the Forum.
And we saw SO many brides & grooms while there! I’m pretty sure we counted 9 wedding couples during just our time in Rome!
Here’s the Trevi Fountain, which we also returned to at night. The Romans were very proud of their aqueducts & there are myriad fountains around Rome to prove that fact; this one is definitely one of the top attractions & it’s easy to see why once you’re there. It’s mesmerizing.
Dinner was at L’Antica Birreria Peroni. It was fun because it was packed with locals by the time we left. The atmosphere was welcoming and abuzz with liveliness and fun!
Here’s my spaghetti alla carbonara. Josh had ravioli and a hamburger with french fries. I’m certain we burned enough calories throughout the entire day walking and climbing stairs that we deserved to splurge. ๐ Side note: Italian hamburgers don’t come with buns. That’s my fav way to eat a burger!
We ventured back to the Trevi Fountain at night. It’s a pretty PACKED spot, but still somewhere worth checking out when you’re in Rome.
Slightly crowded. haha.
We threw our coins over our heads & into the fountain while making our wishes, as is an uber touristy thing to do “when in Rome.” The coins are all collected and used to subsidize a supermarket for Rome’s needy.
After that jam-packed day full of fun and sightseeing, we were beat! Stay tuned for the rest of our experience in Rome, as we’ll be sharing it soon! If you missed our first post on Rome, you can check it out HERE. We also blogged about Munich, Venice, and Florence.
