We’ve heard that people are enjoying this blog series called Fun with Photography & we’re glad you are! That’s why we decided to write it! 🙂
Here are the other Fun with Photography posts so you can catch up if you missed them:
Shooting Layers (all about having fun with foreground, middleground, and background to make your images unique)
After the Sunset (all about how to utilize off-camera flash to achieve dramatic images with the sky after sunset)
Today’s topic is leading lines. You can have so much fun with leading lines- finding them, composing your image to utilize them in different ways, and then, once you’ve mastered them, purposely breaking the “rules” about them to make your images creative or unique.
Not to be too simplistic, but a leading line is a line (made from any number of things) in a photograph that leads your eyes on a path. When you see a line, your eye automatically follows it to see where it leads. Photographers usually use leading lines to lead the viewer’s eyes toward the subject of the photograph.
But you can use the lines however you want to make your image unique. You can tilt the horizon (with intention), you can lead the viewer’s eyes away with the lines, or you can find lines that intersect and lead the viewer’s eyes all sorts of directions depending on what you’d like to achieve with your image. Have fun with it! It’s an art, of course, not a science!Finding creative ways to make your composition more pleasing to the eye and interesting will improve your photography & allow you to have fun when you’re out shooting. Looking for leading lines is fun because they’re everywhere and can be used in so many different ways!Have fun out there!
